What is the role for supervisor and what kind of management and leadership skills are required.?

Posted on March 2nd, 2010 by admin

I am applying for a position of supervisor in an electronics store. This store has 10 millions pounds of per turn over. I have been asked to write a statement to describe the role of supervisor and what kind of management and leadership skills are required for this role. Please any one can help me to explain this. Thanks

the job does come first when your a supervisor like it or not. you have to be an example at all times because they look to you as their leader.
that means no calling off no coming in late. the job has to get done remember you are the supervisor so you have to show them how they can get the job done. you have to be equal to all no favortisms or they will see that and it will hurt your career. there’s no such thing as can’t. so never let your workers here you say can’t. where theres a will theres a way. you have to be strong emotionally and mentally. theres always going to be someone who dont like you especially when your their supervisor. so you have to watch that person and listen to them and try to win them over.if your employees is not behind you, you will be weak get them behind you and theres nothing they wont do for you. you will find out you dont have to tell them what to do they will do it on their own. they already know their job. they just want someone to tell them what a great job their doing. supervisory is a headache sometimes but it is doable. its a lot easier if you get their cooroperation. and always stay within the company’s policy no matter what but yet keeping the employee happy and the consumer happy. always smile be friendly. good luck.

What can institutions of higher education do to create environments that are more equitable in terms of gender?

Posted on March 2nd, 2010 by admin

Example:

I think that higher education institutions need to make changes in
several areas to ensure gender equity. One area is that there must be
recognition of the value of different leadership styles.

Many of our case studies have advocated for more participative
leadership styles. If these are adopted by institutions it seems that
women will have a better ‘fit’ in terms of leadership style/traits and
the organizational expectations.

Eagly and Carli argue modern management theory calls for "more
feminine and androgynous skills of negotiation, cooperation,
diplomacy, team building, and inspiring and nurturing others." If
institutions can evolve to a place where leadership incorporates these
traits, it should go far in the pursuit of gender equity. If only
traditional, more ‘masculine’ leadership styles are the only ones
valued, then people that employ more ‘feminist’ styles will not have
the same level of success.

Nothing anymore. Over 50% of undergraduates now are female in Canada and the USA. My daughter (in graduate school now and on the way to a PhD) would be very resentful if anything were changed to pander to her being female. As far as she is concerned knowledge, deep down, has no gender.

What are examples of leadership skills in school that colleges look for?

Posted on March 2nd, 2010 by admin

I’m starting to think about colleges..and I know colleges like good leadership skills. What are some good examples of this in school? Does this mean like student body president? Or can it be something smaller?

Any (ANY) "official position" looks good. Become the treasurer of some random club or something – it’s easy, hopefully you learn something about leadership, and you can use it to write about in your essays. Or, you can start your own club.

Or you can be the student body president, lead of a school play, etc – but that’s so much work, and you may not like it.

Note that, whatever you get involved in, you have to stay committed to it for a while (or else it looks like you’re just trying to look "resume-good")

Why did the Democratic leadership set the vote to release oil from the strategic reserves up for a failure…?

Posted on March 2nd, 2010 by admin

by requireing a 2/3 majority instead of a simple majority? Had they went with a simple majority(standard rule) it would have passed.

They didn’t want it voted on because then the Republicans could have forced a vote on drilling and people would have been forced to actually vote against drilling..

Why both coercive and pacesetting leadership styles had a negative impact on business climate and organization

Posted on March 2nd, 2010 by admin

It is to identify the effects of coercive and pacesetting leadership style to the staff. What are the usual response from the staff, are they motivated? or refused to act as directed? If so, what are the impact to the business. Will the sales be better or worst? What will be the impact to the organization as a whole? More turnover or….????

Coercive leadership style has a negative effect because it is based on the concept "Do this, do that", and that is de-motivating for the workforce. It is useful when the company needs a complete turnaround or when employees are under-effective and it is your last resort.

Pace-setting leadership style is only effective when employees are well trained, have a lot of skills, and experience on the job. This style has a negative effect when the pace is too fast and the objectives set by the leader are too difficult, or impossible, to achieve.

The six main leadership styles are: Coercive, Authoritative, Affiliative, Democratic, Pacesetting and Coaching. It is necessary to be flexible enough to know which to choose according to the situation and to establish objectives that are specific, measured, attainable, and time-oriented.

Is task-centered leadership more effective than employee-centered leadership? Why or why not?

Is task-centered leadership more effective than employee-centered leadership? Why or why not? Can someone help me answer this question

The ideal situation is not either/or but both/and.

Some managers (and employees) tend toward task orientation, while some are more people-oriented. There is no one-size-fits-all.

Employees who are "people people" will resent a purely task-oriented management style, thinking that the boss cares more about goals than about them.

Employees who are themselves task-oriented prefer a focus on what they can accomplish, and consider the people stuff a waste of time.

A wise manager can discern the different types of employees, and deal with them as individuals according to their strengths as much as possible.

Best of success.
