Too Simple, Sometimes Naive

Posted on April 30th, 2010 by admin

Former Chinese President Jiang ZeMin (江泽民) scolding Hong Kong journalists when they asked him a question he didn’t like. The whole thing happened during a live broadcast.

The phase he used, “too simple, sometimes naive”, became an instant hit on internet.

I believe this video revealed a human side of Jiang that’s rarely shown on China’s state controlled media. It showed he’s not the glorious, always right demigod the party mouthpiece made out to be, but he’s also not the evil Doctor who lives in a fallout bunker in Beijing with a black cat on his lap, as the western media often implies. He’s just a normal person with flawed characters, just like an average grandpa on streets.

Because top officials are sheltered from public scrutiny in China, he’s sorely unprepared to deal with an independent press. Note only he lacked the practice, he also doesn’t have the usual slick image and eloquence you often find in western politicians.

He’s unpolished and unsophisticated enough to be easily rattled by a mildly challenging question; He’s also vain enough to pull out his “Mike Wallace” experience in a desperate attempt to salvage his image after he already lost his temper.

He’s also a bit arrogant, but for good reason. After all, he was the President of China at that time. He can be forgiven for speaking with a chip on shoulder.

For all his flaws, he’s a seasoned politician, a competent one actually. Even during his emotional outburst, he held the ground on principle matters. He stated according to the Basic Law, HK SAR is but a special administrative region of China and the Central Government has the final authority on deciding the governorship. He went to say until the next governor is decided, he, as the head of the Central Government, has to support the head of the local government.

Basically, he was smart to notice the press was asking him a trick question, and he didn’t like to be made a fool.

Can the Columbus Blue Jackets possibly make the playoffs?

Posted on April 28th, 2010 by admin

The Blue Jackets have explosive young talent, veteran leadership, a good coach, and a loyal fan base, but they just keep losing. Is there any hope they make the playoffs this year after such a terrible start? The recent five game win streak barely dented the standings…

It doesn’t look good, but here are some things to consider.

1. It is a LONG season. 82 games. We are less than half way through that total.

2. The Jackets had a bad start, but there were a couple of good reasons. Injuries to Fedorov, Zherdov, and Foote did not help you get off to a good start. A slow start by Rick Nash did not help, either. Now you’ve got most of these guys back, and Nash is playing much better.

3. Lots of changes have happened to your team since last year. New players like Carter and Modin need time to adjust to a new team. Now you’ve got a new, and MUCH improved coach as well. As they adjust to each other, they should play better.

4. You are only nine points out of a playoff spot right now. That’s less than 5 games. The team needs to keep playing well, and they ESPECIALLY need to beat teams like Minnesota, Chicago, and other teams that are right above them.

5. Goaltending! Goaltending! Goaltending! You are not going anywhere without this. Pascal Leclaire, for whatever reason, did not step it up this year. Norrena has been inconsistent, but has shown signs of brilliance. If one of these two guys can step it up and play to their full potential, that will help a lot.

Bottom line is that it does not look good. I would not put money on the Jackets making it. They can play better, but they cannot necessarily stop the teams above them from playing better. That said, it is far from impossible. If the pieces come together they can take a run at it. It is not too late by a long shot. I would never put anything past Ken Hitchcock. The recent 5 game win streak may not have made much of a dent, but it was a step in the right direction. Think where you’d be without it!

Can someone tell me the difference between leadership and management (if there is any)?

Posted on April 28th, 2010 by admin

If there is such a difference how you get managing directors?

You can manage the leaders by many ways: via salary, promotion, ambitions. You can lead the managers by many other ways, too.

Manager could be CEO, general manager, and report to a leader, who is CEO, general manager etc. Or vice versa.

Some people are born as natural leaders by qualities, abilities, or got those abilities by hard work.

Sometimes leadership and management could work against each other. For example,in jail. Some criminals potentially could be hidden or open leaders, and prison managers should somehow deal with that.

It’s complicated in jail, and not easier in business environment.

We could structure the differences between leadership and management in the following aspects:
* personal targets
* social targets
* moral values
etc.

In the ideal organization/structure the both vectors (managerial and leadership) increase each other by going in the same direction. If there is the slightest angle between them, they are diminish each other, and in the worsest case scenario, result everything to zero (useless state).

Is north America a good place to develop your communication and leadership skills?

Posted on April 28th, 2010 by admin
